In a significant step toward strengthening refugee livelihoods and promoting self-reliance, the Government of Uganda, through the Office of the Prime Minister, partnered with African Women Rising to provide essential agricultural tools to refugee households.

As part of this initiative, 180 hand hoes were distributed with the support of African Partners for Child Poverty (APPCO), working hand in hand with the Community Development Office and local community leaders. This collaborative approach ensured that the tools reached the most vulnerable households, particularly those with limited access to farming equipment and those actively engaged in agricultural activities.

The distribution exercise was not only about handing over tools but also about building capacity. Beneficiaries were sensitized on the proper use and maintenance of the hoes, with guidance on how to apply them effectively in land preparation, planting, weeding, and backyard gardening. This practical knowledge was intended to maximize the impact of the intervention, enabling households to cultivate their gardens more productively and sustainably.

The provision of hand hoes is expected to contribute significantly to improved household food security, increased agricultural production, and enhanced self-reliance among refugee communities. By equipping families with basic farming tools, the program empowers them to take charge of their own food production, reduce dependency, and strengthen their livelihoods.

This timely intervention was complemented by the distribution of organic cereals, further supporting refugees to engage in productive farming. Together, these efforts create a foundation for long-term resilience and economic empowerment.

The collaboration between the Government of Uganda and APPCO demonstrates the importance of partnerships in responding to the needs of vulnerable populations. It highlights how coordinated action between government institutions, civil society organizations, and community leaders can deliver tangible benefits that improve lives and foster hope for a more self-reliant future.
